COVER FEATURE: GHETTOBLASTER
One of our all-time favourite Commodore 64 gems finally grooves its way into the pages of our humble little zine. This issue, we crank up the volume with a full-blown retrospective on Ghettoblaster — Virgin Games’ rhythm-fuelled arcade adventure that had us dancing through the streets back in the day. It’s bold, it’s bonkers, and yes… the rhythm is gonna get ya!
THOUGHTS & MEMORIES: GHETTOBLASTER
And it’s not just the editorial team who get the chance to celebrate our cover feature game! Occasional C64 coding dabbler, RESET64 writer and artist, and FREEZE64 fan Ant Stiller is dusting off his boombox to revisit Ghettoblaster, sharing memories of his very first playthrough and giving it another whirl to see if this rhythm-driven romp still hits the right notes in today’s gaming landscape.
HIDDEN HARMONIES
Once more into the SID vault! Warren’s latest Hidden Harmonies selection shines a spotlight on Firebird Software’s quirky SIDtune underdogs, which includes: Denarius, Olli & Lissa, Raging Beast, and Rainbow Dragon.
JULIAN RIGNALL’S CCRAPBACK!
Our Julian shares Part 2 of the poop-infested games that appeared in ZZAP!64 issue 20 from December 1986. He revisits Fist II, Street Surfer, Captain Kelly, and Marble Madness. I can smell the poop from here!
SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES
Our cutesy rodent grabs another batch of secret case files, and reveals all in: Zub, Fort Apocalypse and Bandana City. He’s a sneaky little so-and-so.
DEVELOPERS’ DEN: MARK HARRISON
At FREEZE64 Towers, we’re always excited to welcome a new guest to our humble abode, but when the guest is one of the developers of one of our all-time favourite games, it makes it extra exciting and special. And that’s definitely the case for this issue, as we’re thrilled to be joined by none other than Mark Harrison – one half of the dynamic duo behind Bozo’s Night Out, Seaside Special, and our cover feature classic, Ghettoblaster. It’s the perfect excuse to rewind the tape and explore Mark’s 8-bit journey: how he first dipped his toes into game development, and how he teamed up with the late, great Tony Gibson to bring Ghettoblaster to life. You’re going to *love* it!
LET’S CHEAT IN: GHETTOBLASTER
And if we haven’t already shared enough about the brilliant Ghettoblaster, we also have a cracking selection of exclusive POKES ‘n’ CODES for you to play with, which includes: Freeze Counter, Infinite Battery, No Damage, Stop Tape Steal, and 1 Tape Delivery. Lots of sneaky fun to be had with this gem. 😊
PHANTOM PIXELS WITH KARL HÖRNELL
The great Karl Hörnell returns to share a final glimpse into the past, unveiling a collection of rediscovered graphical treasures from his personal archives. Definitely a great piece of game development history finally revealed.
OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’
Widow’s Revenge crawls out of the Mouldy Cupboard and weaves a web of fear… but is it any good, or are we just going to be disappointed? You’ll have to read our little retrospective and find out.
DIARY OF A GAME: OPERATION VOSTOKA
And finally, it’s time for part 9 of Chris Stanley’s fantastic Operation Vostoka game development diary as he works on the game’s door-opening mechanics. This game is really shaping up to be another Megastyle hit.
