# And it burns, burns, burns… the ring of fire, the ring of fire #

FOUND ISSUE 83
# Goodness gracious, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE! #

COVER FEATURE: FIRETRAP
We have a whole host of scorching goodies for you, beginning with our cover feature game, FIRETRAP. I know that quite a few of you enjoy the game and so we’re going to take a retrospective look at what it has to offer. Oh — and it turns out that this ‘retrospective’ isn’t really a look back at all – it’s me discovering the game for the very first time, peering at it with fresh, slightly older eyes. You could say I’m about to experience a baptism of fire!

LET’S CHEAT: FIRETRAP
Time to be a little sneaky and take our copy of FireTrap and pass it through our infamous Vinny-O-Matic™ for an additional bit of fun. We share and explain our POKES ‘N’ CODES for Infinite Lives, Freeze Timer, Collision Off, we reveal all the sprites, and finally we share the SYS code for reset-switch owners to restart the game. Sorted.

HIDDEN HARMONIES
Warren conjures up another instalment of Hidden Harmonies, a regular series where he takes you all on a sonic journey in search of lesser-known musical gems from the golden age of Commodore 64 soundtracks. This issue includes the fabulous: Cyberdyne Warrior, MotoX, Octoplex, and Run the Gauntlet.

JULIAN RIGNALL’S CCRAPBACK!
Julian continues with the poop-infested releases that were reviewed in ZZAP!64 issue 22 – February 1987. These include: It’s A Knockout, Defcom, Cobra, Howard the Duck, and Judge Dredd. The stink is overpowering!

SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES
Our cutesy rodent grabs another batch of secret Commodore 64 game case files, which includes: Ball Crazy, Gryphon, and Bounder (again!). He really knows his stuff!

DEVELOPERS’ DEN: MIKE CHILTON
In true FREEZE64 fashion, we’re also catching up with FireTrap’s developer, Mike Chilton, who happily spills the beans on what it was really like creating Commodore 64 games throughout the Eighties. Even better, Mike will be back in the next issue to talk us through the making of Predator — which just so happens to be our upcoming cover feature. Plenty to share and plenty to get excited about.

DEMO DEMONS: ALOFT
We hunt down another cracking C64 demo for you to marvel over, and this time around it’s the amazing ALOFT by the very clever guys ‘n’ gals at Genesis Project.

OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’
Popping into the Mouldy Cupboard on a regular basis isn’t just for the sake of this feature… Every so often I’m on a mission to rescue and preserve something for Gamebase 64 (GB64.com). On one such dive I unearthed Tank Atak from Supersoft – a game I haven’t touched in over 40 years. Has this one aged gracefully, or has the mould well and truly set in? Time to find out.

DIARY OF A GAME: OPERATION VOSTOKA
It’s time for part 12 of Chris Stanley’s Operation Vostoka game development diary as he continues to integrate a new character set. It’s all very interesting stuff!

MY C64 HEAVEN: KARL CULLEN
A chance to check out one of our Readers’ Commodore 64 collection. This time around we whizz over to East Grinstead in the UK and meet up with Karl Cullen (aka Mellow Man) to check out his cool Commodore 64 collection of goodies.
