LOAD “ISSUE 87”,8,1 # We’re on a road to nowhere… come on inside…#
FOUND ISSUE 87 “ROADS? Where we’re going, we don’t need ROADS!“
COVER FEATURE: ROAD RUNNER In our eyes, Road Runner is one of the finest arcade conversions to grace the Commodore 64. But does it still hold up today? Time to shove it into the infamous FREEZE‑O‑MATIC™ and see whether it has stood the test of time.
HIDDEN HARMONIES: EPYX GAMES Warren Pilkington is back with another fine instalment of Hidden Harmonies, a regular series where he takes you all on a sonic journey in search of lesser-known musical gems from the golden age of Commodore 64 soundtracks. This time he’s taking a hop, step, and jump into the Epyx Games series, spotlighting standout SID tunes from a selection of the Olympic events that we think you’ll enjoy.
JULIAN RIGNALL’S CCRAPBACK! Our very own Julian Rignall dives into three more games from ZZAP!64 issue 23 – this time revisiting a trio of CCRAPBACK titles I don’t ever recall playing. Maybe his original comments back in March 1987 were enough to put me off. This’ll be interesting!
SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES Just one game secret for this issue as we ran out of space! But it’s a corker of a hidden message found in a game from 1994. Intrigued? Good 🙂
DEVELOPERS’ DEN: SEAN TOWNSEND Sean Townsend – programmer extraordinaire – returns to walk us through his time crafting the superb C64 arcade conversion of Road Runner. It’s a deep dive into one of his most impressive pieces of work for the Commodore 64, and a brilliant look behind the scenes of a beloved classic. MEEP MEEP!
IN PICTURES: ROAD RUNNER DEVELOPMENT We take a look at some of the development visuals used to create our cover feature game, all courtesy of Sean Townsend. Cheers Sean!
THE MAKING OF THIN ICE with Chris Shrigley Our second returning legend is none other than Chris Shrigley, the talent behind Gremlin Graphics’ iconic Bounder. The last time we caught up with Chris was way back in FREEZE64 issue 20. Well, things have changed – in the best possible way. Chris is back developing brand‑new C64 games, and he’s dropped by FREEZE Towers to chat about the making of his latest title, THIN ICE, created alongside the lovely Terry Lloyd for Thalamus Digital Publishing Ltd.
OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’: STAR COMMAND Time to dig out a shoot-‘em-up from Supersoft called Star Command. It has been some time since I played it, and I’m not too sure if it’s any good!
DIARY OF A GAME: OPERATION VOSTOKA It’s time for part 16 of Chris Stanley’s Operation Vostoka development diary as he continues adding new objects to the game. It’s really shaping up to be a fun and exciting title for the Commodore 64. I bet you can’t wait to play it!
MY C64 HEAVEN: DAVID BALDERSTONE A chance to check out one of our Readers’ Commodore 64 collections. This time around it’s David Balderstone from Chorlton in Manchester. Not only does he have a neat set-up, but he also owns an impressive collection of Commodore 64 clothing.
