COVER FEATURE: THE WILLOW PATTERN ADVENTURE
We take a retrospective look at Firebird Software’s charming ‘The Willow Pattern Adventure’ and find out exactly what all the fuss is about, and what it has to do with your Aunt’s collection of plates!
OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’: Treasure Island
I’m sure you’re not going to believe me when I tell you that I purchased Treasure Island from eBay on EXACTLY the same day that I started producing this issue of FREEZE64. Why does that matter? Well – I had no idea that the game was produced by our interviewee for this issue, Greg Duddle – it was a complete coincidence! And it was only when the game arrived and I checked to see if it was in Gamebase 64 that I realised it was produced by the same programmer of our cover feature game. It really was a fluke and obvious to me that I just had to feature it in this issue’s Mouldy Cupboard…
DIARY OF A GAME – TRAN BY STEVE COLLINS
Part 3 of the making of TRAN by the great Steve Collins. We continue with Steve’s diary as he leaves Cara Computing and starts spending serious development time on his new C64 shoot-em-up… which he still hasn’t named!
JULIAN RIGNALL’S ZZAPBACK!
Our Julian celebrates top Commodore 64 games from ZZAP!64 September 1987, including Zynaps, Rebounder, Star Paws and California Games.
SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES
I’ve collected many C64 games over the years, and it’s becoming evident that the development teams producing the software had little or no communication with their marketing department. How do we know this? Well – Secret Squirrel reveals a few C64 games that were incorrectly titled back in the day.
DEVELOPERS’ DEN: GREG DUDDLE
As well as producing our cover feature game, Greg Duddle has also been instrumental in developing a whole host of cool Commodore 64 titles for us all to salivate over, and so we sat down and chatted with him about his work, processes and achievements within the games industry.
THE GAMES WE TYPED IN: SYNCRO
Back in issue 37 of FREEZE64 we shared the fab ROX 64 type-in, which was produced by the great Jeff Minter; but did you know that he produced quite a few magazine type-ins? Well – we share another of his fab listings, and also chat with the great man himself about the origins of the code.
REVENGE OF THE MUTANT YAK!
Yes, folks – you’re getting a double-helping of Minter Mania in this issue. This time round we have a little chat with Jeff about his recent fix of a 37-year-old bug in Revenge of the Mutant Camels. The Yak is Back!
NEW & EXCLUSIVE POKES ‘N’ CODES
We grab a copy of Nixy The Glade Sprite by Bubblesoft and shove it through the Vinny-O-Matic to reveal a few cool cheats!
REMEMBERING JASON KELK BY FRANK GASKING
Most of you will know Jason for his Homebrew section in Retro Gamer magazine, his Old School Gaming stands at retro events, and of course, his wonderful C64/8-bit work. Over the years, he produced many demos as part of the Cosine group, and created a vast library of memorable and impressive games. Frank Gasking remembers the great C64 scener, programmer, artist, SID maestro, and writer, Jason Kelk who passed away in June 2021.
