COVER FEATURE: RICK DANGEROUS Here at FREEZE64 we love our platform adventure games, and so it’s a real treat to be revisiting this humorous and beautifully crafted title from Firebird Software. Lots of fun to be had, along with a whole host of new and exclusive Rick Dangerous POKES ‘n’ CODES for you to play with.
OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’ Ever wanted to try the big top? High wire acts, human cannonballs or shooting galleries in front of a live audience? Well now’s your chance as we swipe Circus out from the clutches of the dark, dank, Mouldy Cupboard.
DIARY OF A GAME – TOXIC FRENZY Our third and final instalment of the making of Toxic Frenzy by Jason Oakley. Jason fixes a few annoying bugs and adds the final touches to his cute, arcade Game & Watch style release for the Commodore 64.
JULIAN RIGNALL’S ZZAPBACK! Our Julian is here with a whole bunch of Activision re-releases on the Firebird budget label, which were all reviewed in ZZAP!64 issue 26 from June 1987. They include ZOLYX and ZENJI, which both received a top-rating SIZZLER.
SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES It certainly wasn’t intentional, but we seem to have stumbled on a covertape instalment of Secret Squirrel, focussing on First Samurai and Artura. Some interesting info to share with you all.
DEVELOPER’S DEN: SIMON PHIPPS Simon Phipps has produced the C64 graphics for Rick Dangerous to Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and now he chats with FREEZE64 about his time working in the 8-bit gaming industry and specifically his work for the C64.
WE DON’T DO REVIEWS! It has been a long time coming, but we finally get the chance to review the cute platformer called Tiny Quest from the Digital Monastery team… the only problem is, WE DON’T DO REVIEWS!
DISCOVERING WINNING STREAK We recently had a telephone chat with pixel artist Jonathan (Smyth) Temples where he revealed how he once tried his hand at C64 programming and ended up creating a game that never was. You’ll get to read the full story and listen in on the conversation as to how the game was finally released into the C64 scene.
NEW & EXCLUSIVE POKES ‘N’ CODES Back in issue 43 we reviewed the fab arcade platformer Runn ‘n’ Gunn, and now it’s time to hack the code and share a few exclusive POKES ‘n’ CODES for you all to play with. We have some exclusive features such as Fly Mode, Walk Through Walls, and we also give you the chance to access a Keycard at any point during the game with a list of POKES that code in a key-press cheat.
MY C64 HEAVEN WITH RHYS CLATWORTHY This time round we’re taking a trip over the Severn Bridge here in the UK to Swansea in South Wales where we visit FREEZE64 subscriber and Commodore 64 programmer extraordinaire, Rhys Bonham Clatworthy.
